Katie's Birthday Cake

So I actually got a picture of Katie's birthday cake from June while down in Vegas this weekend, which was a great time, and I still have to laugh about this amazing cake.

On the night of the party we were running a little late and we were on the way to the party when I realized I hadn't picked up a cake for my beautiful wife. So we go to Albertsons to pick up some "supplies" and I run in and tell the girl at the counter, "I need a Birthday cake that says 'Happy Birthday Katie'". Now she looks normal enough; a nice, white Mormon girl who is probably in high school, however she looks at me as if I just spoke Klingon to her. I repeat slowly, " I need that cake". She finally picks up what I'm throwing down and gets the cake that I was pointing at out of the case. By now its been five minutes since I left the car.

She starts to put it in a box and I ask again, "Can you put 'Happy Birthday Katie' on it?" She looks confused again and looks at the cake, then to me, then back to the cake. She says she can try, which makes my confidence in her abilities start to wane. She asks how to spell 'Katie'. By this time I'm having flashbacks to my students last year at academically challenged Durango High and the time I was asked if Columbo was the same person as Columbus or the time that a student turned in a project entitled "Pearl HABOR" which involved tanks and hand-to-hand combat, but no ships or bombers.

I politely answer and await the result. 10 minutes later, after I've perused the birthday candles, sugar decorations and an assortment of baked goods, she's returned with the following cake and asks, in her valley, cheerleader tone, "I think I got it all, is this alright?"

I glare at the obvious omission, but smile seeing a silver-lining in seeing Katie's face when she sees the cake and imagining how hard she'll laugh.
"Perfect" I say, "Couldn't have asked for better."

Ha ha! That cake was classic! We must find the "nice, white Mormon" girl who is so intellectually inept that she can't figure out how to write "happy" or spell "Katie"....I rest my case.

Mr. Archibald!!
Haha, I bet you would have never guessed a student finding you on here. =) I really hope that wasn't MY Pearl Harbor project you were talking about. =/ Awesome birthday cake... Hope things are going well!
Your student, Jessica

It wasn't your Pearl Harbor project Jessica, you knew how to spell 'Harbor' and if I'm not mistaken you had over a 100% in my class. Needless to say, you are NOT academically challenged. How are you? How did you find this?

I am laughing still...at least she wasn't in my sophomore English class. I feel so much guilt sometimes that some of them still can't find a noun...

Obviously, not you, Jessica!

I will never forget how Columbo crossed the ocean blue nor how many grenades were thrown that fateful day at Pearl Harbor.

I am doing really good, actually. I am now attending a charter school. It's a home-schooling program. My grades are better then ever. So overall, I am good. I found your blog because I know Mrs. Wever's blog and on your comment I saw it said Matt Bohgos (I think thats how you spell it), and I thought, "this is a person from Durango". I clicked your name and saw your picture and I was like, "Hey! Thats Mr. Archibald!" Sorry I interrupted your student free blog.. haha, I just had to say,"Hi!"

P.S. I don't have a Blog, I just have a profile on the so called, "Teen Site" myspace.. haha

Loved this blog posting... I hope Katie appreciated that cake. I once ordered a cake after the '00 elections for my joint College Republican/College Deomocrats meeting... I filled out a form and asked that it read "Florida Sucks" (due to the voting debacle).

Well, the bakery refused saying that they could not print anything negitive on the cake... whatever. So, then the man asked us why we hated Florida. The whole contry knew about the election, so we begin to explain. He then said "What are people voting on"

He was serious.
